The Hermitage, Braxted Park, Great Braxted, Essex
We recently completed work on an interesting and mysterious structure at Braxted Park in Essex. Originally known as ‘The Cave’, it wasn’t certain what the building was originally used for, but after Colchester Archaeological Trust completed a survey of the structure, it became a little clearer why it might have been built. It’s thought that it was constructed around 1804-1808 during the relandscaping of Braxted House by the then owner, Peter Du Cane II, as a homage to Fingal’s Cave in Scotland.
After our extensive restoration of the structure, which lies adjacent to the lake and is only accessed via underground tunnels, it was put forward as a candidate for the Maldon and District Design and Conservation Awards.
After the judges deliberation, they were “immensely impressed by the magnitude of this extraordinary project. The timely structural intervention has saved an enigmatic and exceptional historic structure from collapse. The judges admired the way in which the repair project was complimented by research and archaeological investigation of the building.”
And to add to the award, Duncan Clark of the Braxted Park Estate gave a shining testimonial:
“Firstly I would like to say that I am delighted with the work Bakers have done on the Ice House. It’s been a good project, completed on time and under budget and with minimum disruption to the Estate so for that I’d like to thank all involved. I am really proud of the result although it’s been a long haul it’s been worth it and I very much look forward to showing members of the public around this extraordinary and unique structure. So a big well done for that!”
