History

Bakers has been operating from its registered office at Eves Corner, Danbury, since Tuesday, 11th June 1878 when its founder, William Baker, first commenced trading.

In 1947 Reginald Perrott (the last member of the "Baker" family to be involved with running the firm) took control of the business and appointed David Wood (now Chairman) as his assistant. David Wood was appointed a director in 1965 and acquired the majority shareholding in 1976 (following the retirement of Reginald Perrott).

In 1987 the company acquired the business of H & K Mabbitt of Colchester, established Joiners and Woodcarvers and Bakers continues to use the H & K Mabbitt trading name today.

In 2000 the company acquired the business of L J Watts in Colchester, established Stone and Monumental masons and continue to trade under that name.

When the Company started to trade it was normal for the local builder to also act as Funeral Directors and we still trade as Funeral Directors today.

Location

We are located at Eves Corner, Danbury, Essex, just off the A414 between Chelmsford (5 miles) and Maldon (7 miles).

Workforce

Our workforce comprises of approximately 70 craftsmen covering skills such as Bricklaying, Carpentry, Joinery, Leadworkers, Painting and Decorators, Plasterers and Restoration. Selected subcontractors are used to supplement the workforce if required.

Size of Contract

The size and value of contracts we undertake vary considerably and we would expect to have a mix of large (up to £1.5 million) and small contracts in progress at all times.

We are committed to providing our customers (large and small) with high-quality workmanship and service.

Insurance cover

£10 million liability cover.

Turnover

In recent years, turnover has been between £4 to £5 million.
