Bakers of Danbury Ltd
Ecclesiastic Works
Bakers have been working on churches since soon after their founding in 1878.
Initially limited by horse-drawn transport, by the early 1920s jobs were being carried out as far afield as Braintree, Ashen and Birdbrook. Today the department operates throughout a larger geographical area than the rest of the company and can be found working as far out from its central Essex base as Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Kent, although the majority of contracts are in Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgshire.
Bakers specialise in every aspect of church works, from stone masonry and brickwork, to carpentry and high class joinery, tiling, slating and leadwork and other sheet metal roof finishes, and decorating. The directly employed workforce includes masons, bricklayers, plasterers and carpenters but are regularly supplemented with specialist sub-contractors including metal workers, stained glass specialists, architectural conservators, and decorators.
Contracts normally range in value from a few hundred pounds up to in excess of £500,000.
Our highly skilled staff have the benefit of experience in traditional construction methods that have been passed down through the generations since the founding of the company. This experience continues to be handed down to the younger generations today. All of our directly employed men hold CSCS Heritage cards in addition to their respective trade qualifications. Many of them have been with the company in excess of twenty years.
